sensitive to soil compaction.

Wildlife Value: Provides nesting sites for birds and makes good winter cover. Seeds provide food for songbirds, upland ground birds, and small mammals. Bark serves as food for porcupines, and foilage is lightly browsed by deer.

Other Uses & Notes: Works well as a windbreak/shelterbelt, privacy screen, accent planting, or group planting in recreational areas and public grounds and even as a Christmas tree. Is adapted to cold and is very resistant to winter injury. Offers a denser, more compact habit than the white spruce.
